Nostalgic Bubs

It is 12:45 Thursday morning. Lincoln refuses to go to sleep. It has become a battle of wills. He is laying quietly in his crib right now, but I know that's his trick to get me to the point of sleep. Then he'll wake up. Instead of going to sleep, I'll stay up and do an entry.

Today's list is sure to spark controversy, because I can't remember things very good.

Coolest BYU games ever

13 - Football - vs. UTEP - 1980 or so. BYU won 83 - 7. This is the game that I learned my 7 times tables. I was able to remember the scores BYU had on their way to 84. Too bad they missed that last extra point.

12 - Football - vs Utah - 1998 I think. BYU has the game in hand, but allow a huge kickoff return. Luckily, some moron on Utah gets a celebration penalty, and Kanashiro misses the game winning Field Goal attempt. I still remember the sound of the ball hitting the uprights.

11 - Football - vs. Air Force - 1990. AFA Quarterback complains nonstop about the crowd being too loud. The refs actually penalize BYU about 5 times for their crowd being too loud. BYU still won.

10 - Basketball - vs. Utah - 1994 I think. BYU down by 2. Robby Reid wastes all this time dribbling around at the top of the key, and then hits this 30 footer at the last second to win it. Problem was, he thought he could do that again for the rest of the year.

9 - Football - Air Force - 1985. AFA is ranked #3 in the country. Randy Miller is running it at me how BYU is going to lose. The refs are crappy, and put BYU in a whole. Via Sikahema (I know I butchered that one) runs a punt back for a TD. BYU wins 28 - 21, Bubs visits the bathroom at least 8 times that game.

8 - Football - Miami - 1990. Miami comes in ranked #1. Detmer dominates, and BYU wins 28 - 21. Detmer goes on to win the Heisman.

7 - Football - UCLA - 1982. A game that put BYU on the map. BYU goes down to LA and beats UCLA. I think BYU is losing the whole time, because while listening to the game on Grandpa Millburn's radio, Paul James kept saying 'UCLA trails by 2'. That is how I learned trails by means your behind.

6 - Football - Utah - 2000. LaVell's last game. BYU has 4th and a mile to go. They somehow convert, then run the same play to get deep in Utah territory. Doman scores the game winning touchdown, and 2 point conversion. Utah fans complain that Staley fumbled the ball. Bubs explains how when its 4th and like 28, you should be able to stop them or you don't deserve to win. Utah fans ignore sound advice from Bubs, and continue to make fools of themselves.

5 - Football - Kansas State - 1996. Cotton Bowl, BYU comes back with a Touchdown pass to KO. Then Omar Morgan seals it with an int. BYU ends up ranked in the top 5

4 - Football - Hawaii - 1984. Hawaii is 1st and goal and has like an inch to get the touchdown to make it a two score game. BYU stops them on the first two downs, then on 3rd down, Kyle Morrell does a flip move over the line, grabs the QB by the collar, and his defense finishes him off. Hawaii gets a Field Goal, but BYU is able to score a TD to win it by one or two. Best BYU play ever.

3 - Football - SMU - Known as the Miracle Bowl, it is third, because BYU didn't end up ranked in the top ten at the end of the year. BYU is down 20 with four minutes left. They come all the way back to win it when Jim McMahon connects with Clay Brown on a desperation Hail Mary. Best comback ever. I don't care what Doug Flutie thinks.

2 - Basketball - Notre Dame - Early '80's. BYU makes it to the sweet 16, only to face a good Notre Dame team. They hang with them, and with 8 seconds left in the game, BYU is down 1. Danny Ainge takes the inbound pass, drives the length of the court, including a behind the back dribble at midcourt, and lays it up and in. BYU celebrates as the last second ticks off the clock. In the elite 8, they lose to Virginia by 5, thanks in part to a Technical charged to Danny Ainge. I'm sure the call was so Cheep.

1 - Football - Michigan - 1984. Number one, because as a result, BYU won the national championship. Bosco gets hurt, and BYU falls behind. Bosco gets out there on his gimply leg, throws a TD pass to Glen Kozlowski to tie it, and then throws one to Kelly Smith to win it. BYU wins 28-21 (sounds familiar). I think Bosco was the most underrated QB ever for BYU, if he didn't have those shoulder problems, he might have done well in the NFL.

There's the list for everyone to disagree with, but I'm standing by it. Like I care what people who start their lists with #1 think.
